Creation on August 6th 2006. Performance by robin meier and olivier pasquet at forum neues musiktheater staatsoper stuttgart for fnm and friends. This sadly was the closing event for that place in which Andreas Breitscheid was the director. FNM was inspiring, a place rich of novel ideas, people and opened for experimentation in music theatre. Productions, creations, technological experimentation and talks (probably the first cycling74 conference in the EU) were organized.
Founded in 2003, the Forum Neues Musiktheater of the Stuttgart State Opera has established itself beyond the production structures of a repertory theater as a laboratory for researching and developing the relationship between music and the scene. The focus is on the use of new media and technologies on stage.
“Where are there places like this in the world today? This is a utopia of theater, I found it here for the first time,” says Italian composer Salvatore Sciarrino in praise of the Forum Neues Musiktheater. At least four projects are realized each season, for which composers, theater producers and ensembles can apply with their ideas and concepts. With its logistics, its technical and artistic know-how, its flexibly configurable performance venue, sound studio, and its studio and seminar rooms, the Forum enables the projects to be developed and realized in several working phases. The working method is understood as “work in progress”, the results are presented to the audience in performances or in a smaller setting as an “atelier”. In this way, the Forum’s events offer new stimuli and impulses to classical opera-goers, to those interested in new music, and to the dance, electronic music, and video scenes.
An important concern of the Forum is the communication of its production forms: Open rehearsals provide insight into working processes, introductory lectures reveal background information, and discussions with the production teams enable an exchange between makers and audience after the performance.
Workshops with internationally renowned artists as well as technology specialists as speakers are held on a regular basis, creating direct access to the latest technological developments and applications in the field of musical theater. In addition, a dialogue takes place between professionals from the art and theater world as well as from commercial sectors and interested amateurs.
Through exchange, cooperation and joint development projects, the Forum Neues Musiktheater establishes a regional and international network with music colleges and universities on the one hand, and with music and media art institutions on the other, and with this concept has become a unique center of interdisciplinary work in Europe.

Das 2003 gegründete Forum Neues Musiktheater der Staatsoper Stuttgart hat sich jenseits der Produktionsstrukturen eines Repertoiretheaters als Laboratorium zur Erforschung und Entwicklung des Verhältnisses zwischen Musik und Szene etabliert. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei der Einsatz neuer Medien und Technologien auf der Bühne.
„Wo gibt es heute noch Orte wie diesen auf der Welt? Das ist eine Utopie von Theater, die habe ich hier zum ersten Mal gefunden“, lobt der italienische Komponist Salvatore Sciarrino das Forum Neues Musiktheater. Mindestens vier Projekte werden in jeder Spielzeit realisiert, für die sich Komponisten, Theater-Produzenten und Ensembles mit ihren Ideen und Konzepten bewerben können. Das Forum ermöglicht mit seiner Logistik, seinem technischen und künstlerischen Know-How, seinem flexibel gestaltbaren Aufführungsort, Tonstudio, sowie seinen Atelier- und Seminarräumen eine Entwicklung und Realisierung der Projekte in mehreren Arbeitsphasen. Die Arbeitsweise versteht sich als „work in progress“, die Ergebnisse werden in Aufführungen oder in kleinerem Rahmen als „Atelier“ dem Publikum vorgestellt. So bieten die Veranstaltungen des Forums klassischen Operngängern, Interessierten an Neuer Musik bis hin zur Tanz-, Musikelektro- und Videoszene neue Anregungen und Impulse.
Ein wichtiges Anliegen ist dem Forum die Vermittlung seiner Produktionsformen: Offene Proben geben Einblick in Arbeitsprozesse, Einführungsvorträge decken Hintergründe auf und Gespräche mit den Produktionsteams ermöglichen nach der Aufführung einen Austausch zwischen Machern und Publikum.
Regelmäßig werden Workshops mit international renommierten Künstlern sowie Technologie-Spezialisten als Referenten veranstaltet und schaffen einen direkten Zugang zu den neuesten technologischen Entwicklungen und Anwendungen im Bereich des Musiktheaters. Zudem findet ein Dialog zwischen Profis aus der Kunst- und Theaterwelt sowie aus kommerziellen Bereichen und interessierten Laien statt.
Das Forum Neues Musiktheater knüpft durch Austausch, Kooperationen und gemeinsame Entwicklungsprojekte ein regionales und internationales Netzwerk zu Musikhochschulen und Universitäten einerseits sowie zu Institutionen der Musik und der Medienkunst andererseits und ist mit diesem Konzept ein einmaliges Zentrum interdisziplinärer Arbeit in Europa geworden.
